Partner Orientation and Training
iCarnegie provides a comprehensive program for preparing new and current partners for a successful curriculum implementation.
iCarnegie's education and training partners provide the instruction component
of our courses, which requires them to assign teachers to the program. As
part of the partnership agreement, iCarnegie offers exceptional Instructor
Orientation, Preparation, and Training services prior to the first iCarnegie
teaching experience - and with each new iCarnegie course that may be added
in future terms.
Why is Instructor Training and Orientation Needed?
Staying on top of the latest developments related to a field of training while still focusing on successful teaching is a challenge for instructors of almost any discipline. For faculty in computer software and IT programs, this challenge is even more pronounced due to the rapid pace of technological change and dynamic workforce needs. But realistically, keeping up with those changes and maintaining the curriculum accordingly could become a full-time job that limits a teacher's ability to focus on other aspects of education and research efforts.
iCarnegie's Instructor Training and Orientation programs provide a solution.
Personalized preparation gives faculty of all backgrounds the opportunity
to update their technical skills and knowledge of contemporary industry,
workplace, and classroom trends. As technology and best-practices continue
to change, faculty can stay current through ongoing interactions with iCarnegie
course experts and partner faculty world-wide.
What Instructor Training and Orientation Involves
Every iCarnegie instructor brings with them different skills and experiences
- from full-time faculty who may need to learn a new programming language,
to adjunct faculty members who have extensive experience in industry but
limited experience in the classroom. The iCarnegie training team provides
a prepration experience that caters to each instructor's unique needs and
goals.
Identifying Instructors = The first step of any new partnership
is to create a plan for implementing the iCarnegie curriculum into the partner's
program, including a course schedule. From there, we work with our partners
to identify their institutional training needs and to develop a training
schedule that meets those needs.
Once this course roll-out timeline is in place, partners identify the instructors who will teach the iCarnegie courses and thus who will require orientation and some degree of preparation. For each of our courses, iCarnegie maintains guidelines on how much pre-classroom preparation time is needed for different types of instructors, based on their current skills and teaching experience. Those guidelines are extremely helpful to partners as they determine how to staff iCarnegie courses instructors.
Instructor Orientation = The orientation familiarizes faculty
with the iCarnegie program and teaching model, allows them to gain proficiency
with iCarnegie's courseware and grading tools, and initiates the professional
relationships they will maintain with the iCarnegie course mentor staff.
iCarnegie Orientation can serve as a culminating event for initial course
training, permitting faculty to gain a deep understanding of skills and
strategies for successful course delivery.
The orientation component ideally is conducted at iCarnegie's headquarters,
which allows the instructors to meet their course mentors in person, but
arrangements can be made to have the orientation at the partner's location
when circumstances require it. The orientation can last 2-5 days, depending
on the number of instructors and how many courses they will be teaching.
Instructor Pre-Classroom Preparation and Training = Instructor preparation prior to the first classroom experience requires the instructors to work through each iCarnegie course they will be teaching. It also includes mentoring from dedicated iCarnegie course experts, which continues through the completion of the first course and is available for all future course instances.
Together, training and orientation are essential ingredients for successfully implementing the iCarnegie curriculum and for ensuring the highest level of student success.
